I think I want a 8th/ 9th-gen F150. I don’t even particularly care about the bed length, engine, 4x4 vs RWD, or manual/ auto , though I prefer a higher trim. What think Oppo of these?

I know that feel . Unfortunately, that one was sold. Same dealer has a ‘97 F-250 with the 7.5 but it’s automatic. Price is too high but I like it.

I don’t know what you’re looking to use one for, but number 4 is the pick of the litter here if you can get the price down a bit. That 6 cylinder truck is going to be deathly slow (but durable), as even the 302 of that era isn’t as powerful as you might expect. For towing work, an auxiliary trans cooler is important. Those AOD trannys didn’t take well to being overheated. Expect ball joints to be shot and trashed radius arm bushings on the front end by 100k. The rear wheel only ABS was kind of wonky on these trucks and prone to problems.

My first truck was 91 F-150 2wd/5.0/extended cab/short bed/lariat. Wasn’t a bad truck. With no cats, a dual glass-pack exhaust, all emissions equipment removed, a better flowing intake and a set of underdrive pulley’s that 302 wasn’t the worst tow vehicle we ever had.

I’m not going to encourage you or anything...

I love these things, but I have to say, a lot of stuff is falling apart. I’m a bit past 150k and it’s needed a lot of love in the past couple of years. This one’s been like a rescue dog, it wasn’t treated very well in a previous life so I feel like I’m always playing catch-up . I’d take it anywhere though .

I  want one as a DD that I can take for weekend Home Depot runs and occasional unpaved backcountry roads exploration - no major towing   is in the plans, at least right now . Power/acceleration isn’t a huge issue; as long as it can (eventually) reach highway speeds I’m set.

Wow, those are both really clean. I’d love to get a Supercab, but they  seem to be either thrashed or overpriced.

I love that two-tone; what work have you needed to do on it?

Trans rebuild, ignition module, broken exhaust studs, engine mounts, hub rebuilds, calipers, wheel cylinders, and brakes all around (due to crumbling caliper pistons and leaking cylinders), u-joints, EGR pipe & intake reseal, realign doors to seal ... still need to do left exhaust manifold, water pump, and AC compressor too. Lots of broken interior plastic. Engine is great, and I’m sure the trans would have lasted longer if serviced better before, but the last year especially has been just keeping up with it. Only left me stranded temporarily with the ignition module, otherwise has always brought me home. I only paid $2200 for it with 135k and it’s not rusty (California) , so could be worse.

It sounds like you’d be happy with a 5.o truck. Also, the dual tanks can be wonky on these too. It’s worth making sure both tanks actually feed during a test drive. It doesn’t sound like you need 4x4 or the 351, so I wouldn’t mess around with the very pretty #5. It sounds like it is ready for an A/C rebuild and 134a conversion, needs some rear ABS attention and is probably warming up for a tranny rebuild.

Yeah, and I like the color. To o bad my bank wouldn’t finance something that old, LOL.

I told my mom and stepdad if they ever decide to sell their 8th gen with the 5.0, 4x4, and 5-speed, they need to let me know first. Also, my dad has a 9th gen with the inline six and 5-speed, but he’s beat it to hell. Plus  he’s the only man I know who can magically make vehicles rust in Colorado.

My friend is on his fourth one of those, and while he loves them, they nickel and dime the shit out of him. The first one was a base F-250 with a 351, and that one was fine, but he wanted 4WD. That brought his 94 F-150 into the picture. That truck was a laughable pile of shit. At one point, some things got stuck, the trans wouldn’t go into park(this is when he found this out), and the truck looped itself into a  building when he had to underhood start the thing. I thought he learned his lesson, but nope. Ninth gen number 3 popped up. This was a 92 F-250 4WD with the 7.3 idi. When it started, it would run fine, but there was always some starting related issue. After he sold it, it burned down. After that, he got a 2012 Ram 1500 that did everything flawlessly. But he hates himself, so he sold that for a 95 F-150 with a mildly built 302.

The straight 6 will NEVER die. The 460 7.5 gets 8MPG no matter what your doing. I want one of these pretty bad.

I learned to drive stick in a ‘91 F-150, my first car was an ‘87 F-150, I drove my dad’s ‘92 F-150 everywhere and my favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned was my ‘93 Lightning, may it rest in peace.

Yeah, I like ‘em. #4 is NP all day.

Oh man, I’ve got such a soft spot for these generation F-150's. My dad had one when I was little. Basic, single cab, black, beat all to hell because he was a carpenter. Even though it was rough and problematic I still like the looks of those. That blue one is almost tempting enough if I had money to spare. I want to say there was a decent one floating around the Outer Banks or Norfolk craigslist not too long ago.
